The Institute for Drugs and Drug Addiction was established as national partner, the European Project FACE – European Network for Children Affected by Risky Environments within the family, funded by the European Commission.
This project, lasting 20 months, began in January 2003, and will be in May 2004, that will present their (former) results to the public in an allusive Symposium on ‘Coping with Parental Drinking‘ (1st Symposium on Children in Families with Alcohol Problems) to be held on 14 and 15 in Germany, and during which it will proceed to launch the website, www.encare.info.
The starting point of the FACE was the realization that, in the public discussion of the substance abuse, children living in families defined as contexts of alcohol abuse have been in the shadow relative to those who have severe problems with toxic substances.
The FACE project – European Network for Children Affected by Risky Environments Within the Family is an informative, educational European project, prevention, treatment and research designed to tackle the problems faced by children living in families defined as contexts of alcohol abuse.
To improve the situation of children living in families defined as alcohol abuse contexts and minimize the risk of subsequent addition problems:
- Support the work of the professionals of prevention, treatment, harm reduction and research
- Working network by building websites and through cooperation of FACE job network.
As a final target audience was defined: families with problems of alcohol abuse as a whole, children (from the prenatal period) living in these families, those who are close to these families, the general public, professionals, policy makers, and mass media.
As a strategic target group was determined: Entities/individuals, project partners, experts, researchers, and other professionals, policy makers and the general public.
The Project believes it can achieve it’s objective promoting the capacity, in government and non-government services, to provide help and support directly or indirectly to children. Notably through the exchange on information/experience and, where appropriate, through the joint development of materials, good work practices, training and/or other forms of intervention.
To promote this sharing of knowledge and dialogue, it established the task of developing a website for professionals and the public. The operational objective of this website, where information will be made viable to those who, directly or indirectly relate to children living in family contexts considered problematic, is to facilitate the work between the parties involved.
Work Network FACE
This project has partners. Europe, 13 countries and 14 institutions. Is expected to create networks in each of the participating countries and in Portugal, this is made up to date (growing), the following entities:
- In Portugal, the Alcohology Regional Centers (North, Center, and South)
- In the Azores, the Regional Directorate of Solidarity and Social Security
- The Autonomous Region of Madeira, the Regional Drug Prevention Service
However, other entities and professionals are also part of this network, linking in some cases – for logistical and operational issues. At regional level with the first Indeed, the network (national) labor FACE is open to all organizations and professionals interested in this problem. The aim is to exert pressure in favor of the issue and keep the website (s) to function even without the support of the European Union Program funding. Thus, these networks work, though, in a way, independent of the Project, support him and disclose the results.
The Project will focus it’s activities initially in the most specific problems of alcohol abuse, the planning it’s activities to include, at a later stage (including an upcoming application), other issues related to the general issue of ‘children in families considered risk contexts’ such as the abuse of illicit psychoactive substances, the existence of mental health problems, family violence, among others.
